We have three open fires in the main house. These reduce the need for the oil central heating in winter, but smoke from burning firewood adds to air pollution, environmental damage and health problems. In time we will retire the open fireplaces but not before we replace the oil boiler. We also have a chimenea outdoors, which requires firewood. To minimise the environmental impact, all firewood is from trees that have naturally fallen on the estate and has been seasoned sufficiently to minimise smoke.
